Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed his plans to hang up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a distinguished career, claiming three Six Nations titles and participating in two Rugby World Cups. Since joining Quins in 2023, the 35-year-old has made 50 appearances, although his involvement has been limited to just six games this term. Launchbury reflected on his decision, stating, "The time has come to step away from rugby, and I feel it's the right moment to do so." He expressed his gratitude to his teammates, past and present, and acknowledged the numerous opportunities he has had, including representing England, Wasps, and Harlequins, as well as a stint in Japan.
Launchbury emphasized that rugby has provided him with a sense of purpose, lasting friendships, and unforgettable memories. He intends to take a break from the sport, allowing his body to recover, and is considering remaining involved in the game in some capacity. For now, however, he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and watching his children grow up.
