Alcaraz Off to a Strong Start in Barcelona Despite Injury Concern

Carlos Alcaraz made a successful return to competition in Barcelona, overcoming an injury scare to defeat Otto Virtanen and advance to the last 16 of the tournament, just 48 hours after losing to Jannik Sinner in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. The Spanish player, who needs to win the tournament to reclaim the world No 1 spot, triumphed over Finland's Virtanen 6-4 6-2, despite requiring a medical timeout due to a wrist issue at the end of the first set. Alcaraz showed no signs of discomfort during his 85-minute win, marking his fourth appearance in the Barcelona R16, his 27th win in his last 29 clay matches, and his 22nd victory of 2026. "Being back and winning in front of my home crowd means everything to me," Alcaraz said, looking forward to his next match against Czech player Tomas Machac on Thursday. "This morning was my first practice in Barcelona, adapting to the local conditions, which differ from those in Monte Carlo. Overall, I'm pleased with how I played and solved the issues I faced in the first set. I ended up playing great tennis, and hopefully, I'll feel even better in the next round." Alcaraz is seeking his third title of the season, following his career Grand Slam win at the Australian Open and his triumph at the ATP 500 event in Doha. The opportunity to quickly reclaim the world No 1 ranking from Sinner provides additional motivation, but steady improvement during the clay season remains his top priority. With Sinner absent from the draw, Alcaraz's chances of winning the tournament are boosted. "I won't miss him this week," Alcaraz joked. "I know I need to win the tournament to regain the number one ranking. The rivalry between Jannik and me is great, and it provides extra motivation. However, my focus is on staying on the path we're on and continuing to improve. We're clear about what we need to do in training and in matches, and that's the main goal, with results and points serving as extra motivation." Alcaraz hopes to play a full schedule on clay this season, with upcoming events in Madrid and Rome, ahead of his French Open title defense in Paris on May 24.
