Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley emphasized that failure is not an option in the pursuit to reduce hitting distances, which have led to a more one-dimensional golf experience. The governing bodies of golf announced their intention to address this issue in 2020 and recently outlined plans to implement a golf ball rollback by 2028, now expected to be delayed until 2030. This change aims to reduce the longest hitters' distances by up to 15 yards. Ridley expressed concerns over the elite players' hitting distances, which have resulted in the game becoming less imaginative and more one-dimensional. He emphasized that this issue goes beyond competitive impacts, affecting course lengths, time, cost, and environmental concerns. The proposed rollback has garnered support from notable golfers, including Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. Ridley reassured that the impact on recreational golfers will be minimal, and the change will preserve the essence of the game. The Masters tournament will feature 10 LIV Golf League players, and Ridley acknowledged that there are still issues to resolve regarding ranking points. The OWGR board aims to maintain the integrity of the ranking system, ensuring transparency and fairness in identifying the world's best players. The Masters will be broadcast on Sky Sports, with extensive coverage and featured groups available throughout the tournament.
