Cyclist Receives 25-Day Ban for On-Race Altercation

The international governing body for cycling has handed down a 25-day suspension to New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts following an incident in which he struck a fellow competitor during a recent race. The altercation, which was captured on video, occurred on March 7 at the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race in the Netherlands, where Watts punched Dutch cyclist Marijn Maas. Watts, 24, has accepted the penalty and will be barred from competition until May 2. The disciplinary action includes a one-day team-imposed suspension served by Watts on March 8. In the aftermath of the incident, Watts issued a public apology, citing his actions as a heat-of-the-moment mistake. His team, NSN Development Team, also extended apologies for the behavior, emphasizing the expectation that riders compete in a professional and sporting manner at all times.
