Garnacho Reflects on Manchester United Departure: 'I Made Mistakes'

Alejandro Garnacho has spoken out about his departure from Manchester United, acknowledging that he made errors during his final six months at the club. Garnacho's £40m transfer to Chelsea last summer followed his exclusion from Ruben Amorim's first-team squad during pre-season. Before his departure, Garnacho sparked controversy by wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford's name on the back. After United's Europa League final loss to Tottenham, Garnacho's brother claimed that Amorim had betrayed him. When asked if he regrets his exit, Garnacho expressed mixed emotions, stating, 'Maybe yes, because I loved that club. They gave me confidence from the start, bringing me from Spain to the academy and then to the first team.' He recalled his final six months at United, saying, 'I was not playing like before, and I started to be on the bench, which isn't a bad thing, but in my mind, I had to play every game.' Garnacho admitted, 'Maybe it's also on me; I started to do some bad things.' Despite this, he expressed pride in his decision to join Chelsea, saying, 'I am really proud to be here and still in the Premier League at a club like this.' Garnacho emphasized that he holds no grudges against United, the club, or his former teammates, viewing his departure as a natural part of life. Amorim reflected on Garnacho's departure, stating, 'You cannot explain specifically what it is, but I have the feeling that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership, and I can understand that.' The manager acknowledged that sometimes players need a new challenge, and the club tries to make everything work for all parties involved.
