Cyclist Handed 25-Day Ban for On-Road Altercation

The international governing body for cycling has imposed a 25-day suspension on New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts following an incident in which he struck a fellow competitor during a recent racing event. Footage from the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race, held in the Netherlands on March 7, clearly shows the 24-year-old Watts punching Dutch cyclist Marijn Maas in the head. According to the Union Cycliste Internationale, Watts has accepted the penalty and will be suspended from competition until May 2. In a statement, the UCI outlined the terms of the suspension, noting that a one-day penalty previously imposed by Watts' team would be deducted from the overall suspension period. Watts took to social media to apologize for his actions, attributing them to a momentary lapse in judgment. His team, the NSN Development Team, also issued a formal apology for the incident. The team emphasized its expectation that all riders must conduct themselves in a professional and sporting manner at all times, extending apologies to Maas, his team, the race organizers, and the UCI Commissaires.
