Alcaraz Overcomes Injury Scare to Advance in Barcelona

Less than 48 hours after his Monte-Carlo Masters final loss to Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz recovered from an injury concern to beat Otto Virtanen and progress to the Barcelona Open's last 16. The Spanish player, who needs to win the tournament to regain the world No 1 spot from Sinner, defeated Finland's Virtanen 6-4, 6-2 despite requiring a medical timeout for a wrist issue at the end of the first set. However, Alcaraz showed no signs of discomfort during his 85-minute first-round victory on home soil. He achieved his fourth Barcelona R16, won 27 of his last 29 clay matches, and secured his 22nd win of 2026. "It's great to be back and win in front of my people in Barcelona; it means everything," Alcaraz said, who faces Czech Tomas Machac on Thursday. "This morning was my first practice here to adapt to the conditions, which differ from Monte Carlo, but overall I'm happy with my performance and how I solved the problems in the first set. I ended up playing great tennis, so hopefully, I'll feel a little better in the next round." Alcaraz is pursuing his third title of the season after completing the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open and winning the ATP 500 event in Doha. He aims to reclaim the world No 1 ranking from Sinner, but his top priority remains steady improvement during the clay season. The two-time Barcelona champion's hopes are boosted by Sinner's absence in the draw, following the Italian's back-to-back victories in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo. Alcaraz joked that he won't miss Sinner this week and acknowledged that he needs to win the tournament to regain the top ranking. "The battle between Jannik and myself is great; it provides extra motivation. However, we're focused on staying on our path and trying to improve. We're clear about what we need to do in training and matches; results and points are extra motivation," Alcaraz said. He hopes to play a full schedule on clay this season, with events to follow in Madrid and Rome ahead of his French Open title defense in Paris on May 24.
