Milan's San Siro Stadium May Host ATP 250 Grass-Court Event Starting 2028

Italy has acquired the rights to host a grass-court ATP 250 tournament, previously held in Brussels, with the event set to take place in Milan starting in 2028. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation, led by president Angelo Binaghi, has announced that the tournament will be held annually in June. While a venue has not been officially confirmed, Milan's San Siro stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, is a strong contender due to its large capacity of over 75,000. Binaghi mentioned that the decision on the venue will be made with climate considerations in mind, suggesting that northern Italy is the likely location. The introduction of practice courts within Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium for the Madrid Open has set a precedent, making the San Siro a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, the federation is set to host the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030, the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna until next year, and the Rome Masters on clay before the French Open. The Foro Italico's Campo Centrale is also undergoing work to install a retractable roof, scheduled for completion by the 2028 edition. Binaghi expressed his ambition to elevate the Rome tournament to the status of a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is aiming to become the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico since Adriano Panatta's victory 50 years ago.
