Great Britain Shocks Australia, Secures Spot in Billie Jean King Cup Finals

The British team, led by captain Anne Keothavong, achieved a stunning 3-0 victory over Australia in their Billie Jean King Cup qualifier. Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart secured the win with a straight-set doubles victory over Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez, 6-3, 6-4, in Melbourne. The pair overcame a 3-1 deficit in the first set after the roof on John Cain Arena was closed, going on to win five consecutive games. After trading breaks early in the second set, Burrage and Dart served out the match at their first attempt, sealing the victory for Great Britain. An emotional Burrage, who underwent surgery on a snapped tendon in her wrist and ruptured an ankle ligament last year, expressed her pride in the team's performance, saying, 'That feels amazing... I'm proud of us for the way that we played.' Dart added, 'It's crazy because we played pretty well, and to be able to make the finals is just kind of surreal.' The win was all the more impressive given the absence of key players, including Emma Raducanu, Sonay Kartal, Katie Boulter, and Fran Jones. Despite this, Harriet Dart and debutant Mika Stojsavljevic, 17, put Great Britain in charge with singles victories over higher-ranked opponents on Friday. Britain has now won their last four qualifier rubbers in the Billie Jean King Cup, with victories over France, Germany, Netherlands, and Australia. The team will compete in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China, in September, alongside the other six tie winners from the qualifiers and host nation China. Captain Keothavong praised her team, saying, 'We're all just overjoyed... it's been an unbelievable week here in Melbourne, and the tennis that was played yesterday and today was just fantastic.' Keothavong believes Great Britain is 'due something special' after reaching the semi-finals last year and is confident that the team can win the Billie Jean King Cup, stating, 'That's always the ultimate goal, and I know we've got players and a strength in depth in the UK to do something special in this competition.'
