Marie-Louise Eta Makes History as First Female Head Coach in Top Five European Leagues

Marie-Louise Eta has broken new ground by becoming the first female head coach in the top five European men's leagues, taking the reins at Union Berlin. Initially set to coach the women's team next season, Eta has agreed to an interim role to secure the men's team's Bundesliga survival with five games remaining. Having made history in 2023 as the first woman to be an assistant coach in the Bundesliga and Europe's top divisions, Eta's appointment is a significant milestone. Union sporting director Horst Heldt expressed his delight at Eta's agreement, stating, "I'm delighted that Marie Louise Eta has agreed to take on this role on an interim basis before she becomes head coach of the women's first team as planned in the summer." Eta herself said, "Given the points gap in the lower half of the table, our place in the Bundesliga is not yet secure. I am delighted the club has entrusted me with this challenging task." Eta replaces Steffen Baumgart, who was let go following the team's 3-1 loss to Heidenheim. The appointment has been welcomed by England manager Sarina Wiegman, who described Eta as a "trailblazer" and congratulated her and the club on this exciting development. The move is seen as a significant step forward for women in football, with Eta joining a select group of female coaches who have broken down barriers in the sport.
