Sinner Regains Top Spot in the World Rankings After Defeating Alcaraz in Monte Carlo

Following his victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final, Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the world No 1 ranking. Sinner outperformed Alcaraz in the challenging conditions, securing a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win and thus taking the top spot in the ATP rankings for the first time since November 2025. The match, although not as spectacular as some of their previous encounters, was filled with unexpected turns as Sinner overcame a deficit in the second set. This win marks Sinner's first victory over Alcaraz on clay since 2022 and extends his unbeaten streak at Masters tournaments to 22 matches. Sinner expressed his delight at regaining the top ranking, stating, "The result is amazing. Returning to No 1 means a great deal to me. At the same time, the ranking is secondary. I'm thrilled to have won a major trophy on this surface, something I hadn't achieved before." Alcaraz congratulated Sinner, saying, "What you're achieving right now is impressive. Winning the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo is incredible. Congratulations on the work you and your team are doing." The 17th meeting between these tennis superstars won't be remembered as a classic due to the windy and overcast conditions, which affected both players' performance. Alcaraz started strong by breaking Sinner but was soon tied at 2-2. Neither player could surpass the other in the first set, despite Sinner having break point opportunities in the fifth and ninth games. At 6-5, Alcaraz was close to winning the set but Sinner's strong serving helped him escape trouble, and he eventually won the set in a tie-break after 74 minutes. In the second set, Alcaraz broke early but struggled to hold his serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and tie the set at 3-3. Sinner then won the next three games, taking advantage of Alcaraz's frustration and the variability in his play to secure his first Monte-Carlo Masters title. Alcaraz and Sinner will decide whether to face each other again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also compete, before the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome leading up to the French Open in May. In other news, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open by defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3. Andreeva came back from a set down to claim her second WTA title and fourth career title. Andreeva praised Potapova, saying, "I was struggling to find a solution to play against you today. You're an amazing fighter and an even better person." Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed her gratitude for the crowd's support, stating, "Playing here for the first time as an Austrian means the world to me. The support I received this week is unprecedented, and I'm truly thankful."
