Garcia Addresses LIV Golf Shutdown Rumors, Stresses Commitment to the League

Amidst swirling rumors about the future of LIV Golf, Sergio Garcia expressed confidence in the league's long-term prospects, stating that it remains 'a project for many years.' Garcia's comments came ahead of LIV's latest event in Mexico City, where speculation about the league's future has been rampant on social media. The Daily Telegraph reported that LIV Golf executives were summoned to an emergency meeting in New York, sparking concerns about a potential announcement. However, team captains, including Garcia, have not been informed of any imminent developments. Garcia emphasized that the league's chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, has reassured players of his commitment to the project. 'Honestly, we aren't going to listen to anything except for what Yasir told us at the start of the year, that he is behind us, that they have a project for many years,' Garcia said. The Golf Channel's Rich Lerner noted that pairings for the first round of LIV Golf Mexico were released, but players are still awaiting news about their fate. LIV Golf launched in 2021 as a rival to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The league has undergone changes, including expanding to 74 holes in 2026 and increasing the total prize fund to $30m. Notable players like Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, and Dustin Johnson have joined the breakaway tour, but some, such as Brook Koepka and Patrick Reed, have recently defected. Koepka has returned to the PGA Tour, while Reed is seeking reinstatement for the 2027 season and competing on the DP World Tour.
