Andoni Iraola to Depart Bournemouth: Three Coaches Shortlisted as Successors

Andoni Iraola, Bournemouth's head coach, will be leaving the club at the end of the current season. According to Sky Sports News, Marco Rose, formerly of RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund, is among the three potential candidates shortlisted to replace Iraola. Iraola's contract is set to expire in three months, and despite receiving numerous offers to extend his stay, he has chosen not to renew, amidst interest from his former club Athletic Club and other Premier League teams. With six games remaining, Iraola will conclude his three-year tenure at Bournemouth, a period marked by record-breaking achievements. In a statement on the club's website, Iraola expressed that this is the right time for him to step down. His final home game will be against Manchester City on May 17, followed by a trip to Nottingham Forest on the last day of the Premier League season. Bournemouth had attempted to persuade Iraola to stay, but despite their disappointment, the club maintains a mutual respect for him. Discussions about his contract began over 15 months ago, but Iraola preferred to delay meaningful conversations until later in the campaign. The search for a new head coach has been ongoing, with three favored candidates on the shortlist. Currently 11th in the standings, Bournemouth could still achieve European qualification, sitting two points behind seventh place, which would secure a spot in the Conference League next season. Iraola has been a popular figure at Bournemouth since his appointment in June 2023, implementing an attacking and dynamic style of football. The club finished ninth in the Premier League last season, breaking their top-flight record with 56 points. This season, Iraola has had to manage the sales of key players, including Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi, Dango Ouattara, and Antoine Semenyo, for a total of £253m. As one of the Premier League's most sought-after coaching prospects, Iraola's next destination is uncertain. Athletic Club is interested in bringing him back to the Basque Country, where he spent 12 years and played over 500 games. Other clubs, such as Crystal Palace and Tottenham, have also been linked to Iraola, but their interests have shifted to other targets. Manchester United and Newcastle are also speculated to be potential destinations, although no decisions have been made.
