The American's achievement was all the more impressive given that he had to overcome a back-nine collapse and a final-round fightback from Dustin Johnson to cling on for victory. Other notable golfers who have successfully defended their major titles include Tiger Woods, who became the first man in a decade to defend a major when he won the PGA Championship in 2000. Woods' victory established him as the dominant force in golf, and he would go on to claim numerous other titles throughout his career.
