Just 48 hours after his loss to Jannik Sinner in the Monte-Carlo Masters final, Carlos Alcaraz made a triumphant return to the court, defeating Otto Virtanen to reach the last 16 of the Barcelona Open. The Spanish player, who needs to win the tournament to reclaim the world No 1 spot, secured a 6-4 6-2 victory over Finland's Virtanen, despite requiring a medical timeout for a wrist issue at the end of the first set. Alcaraz showed no signs of discomfort during his 85-minute win, marking his 22nd victory of 2026 and his 27th win in 29 clay-court matches.
"It's amazing to be back and get another win in front of my home crowd in Barcelona - it means everything to me," Alcaraz said, looking forward to his next match against Czech player Tomas Machac on Thursday. "This morning was my first practice here, adapting to the conditions, which are different from Monte Carlo.
Overall, I'm really happy with how I played and solved the problems I faced in the first set. I ended up playing great tennis, so hopefully, I'll feel a little better in the next round." Alcaraz is seeking his third title of the season, following his career Grand Slam win at the Australian Open and his triumph at the ATP 500 event in Doha. The opportunity to quickly reclaim the world No 1 ranking from Jannik Sinner provides him with extra motivation, but steady improvement during the clay season remains his top priority. With Sinner absent from the draw, Alcaraz's chances of winning the tournament are boosted, and he hopes to play a full schedule on clay this season, including events in Madrid and Rome, before defending his French Open title in Paris on May 24.
