Nottingham Forest Secure Draw Against Porto After Unusual Own Goal

Nottingham Forest managed to earn a hard-won 1-1 draw against Porto in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, thanks in part to a bizarre long-range own goal. The home team initially took the lead when William Gomes scored at the far post, but their advantage was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Martim Fernandes attempted a back pass to his goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, without looking, and unfortunately, the pass had too much power, sailing past the stranded Costa and into the goal. This unexpected turn of events shifted the momentum in Forest's favor, allowing them to largely frustrate their opponents for the remainder of the match. Forest's coach, Vitor Pereira, made several key changes to the lineup, including a first start in nine months for striker Chris Wood, in preparation for a crucial Premier League game against Aston Villa on Sunday. The visitors also adopted a new formation, switching to three defenders at the back. Although Porto controlled much of the game, their closest attempt to retake the lead came when Stefan Ortega saved Gomes' well-struck shot with 20 minutes remaining. Forest held on, and may have even won the match if not for the Video Assistant Referee disallowing Igor Jesus's effort due to a foul on Costa. The result leaves the tie open, with Forest potentially fancying their chances of advancing to the semi-finals when they host the second leg at the City Ground next Thursday.
