Brundle: Russell Must View Antonelli as a Formidable Title Rival

According to Martin Brundle, George Russell must consider his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli as a significant threat, akin to Lewis Hamilton at the height of his career, as the two engage in an emerging title battle. Mercedes has dominated the start of the season, securing victories in the first three races, with Antonelli unexpectedly holding a nine-point lead over Russell. The 19-year-old Italian has benefited from fortunate circumstances, including a timely safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix, which enabled him to overtake Russell and claim his second consecutive win. Russell, who was favored to win the title before the season began, must now reassess his approach, given the competitive nature of the battle between the two Mercedes drivers. Having spent three years with Williams before joining Mercedes in 2022, Russell was paired with Lewis Hamilton for three seasons before Hamilton's departure to Ferrari in 2025. On the latest episode of Sky Sports' The F1 Show podcast, Brundle stated, 'If I were George, I'd be more concerned after three races than I was at the beginning of the season.' Brundle emphasized that Russell must treat Antonelli as a serious championship contender, similar to how he would have viewed Hamilton in his prime. Antonelli's performance has been impressive, despite a crash on the opening weekend of the season, and Brundle believes Russell's experience will ultimately give him an edge. However, Brundle has been impressed by Antonelli's pace, saying, 'His pace was mighty, and he got lucky with the safety car in Japan, but he's certainly a driver to watch.'
