Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley emphasizes that "failure is not an option" in the quest to reduce hitting distances, which have led to a more "one-dimensional" golf experience. This concern was first addressed by golf's governing bodies in February 2020, with the USGA and R&A unveiling their plan to implement a golf ball rollback in 2023. The proposed tweaks to the testing conditions under the Overall Distance Standard (ODS) aim to reduce the longest hitters' distances by up to 15 yards, with an initial introduction in professional golf expected in 2030, following a potential delay from the original 2028 timeline. Ridley has consistently expressed concerns over the elite players' hitting distances, advocating for changes to protect the sport. He stresses that their position is not solely about preserving the Augusta National golf course, but rather about addressing the broader issue of excessive driving distances that can exceed 350 yards. This has resulted in the game becoming more one-dimensional, with players frequently hitting short irons into par-fours and par-fives, leading to increased course lengths, more time spent, higher costs, and environmental concerns. Notable players such as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have voiced their support for the proposal. Ridley believes that a rollback can enhance the professional game without impacting recreational golfers, citing data that suggests the effects on the recreational game will be minimal. He emphasizes that the greats of the game are defined by their skill in all aspects, not just their hitting distance, and that regulation of the golf ball is essential to preserving the essence of the game. The Masters tournament will feature 10 LIV Golf League players, fewer than in previous seasons, despite the circuit being recognized by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) ahead of the 2026 campaign. Ridley, a member of the OWGR board, acknowledges that there are still issues to resolve regarding LIV Golf's ranking points, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the OWGR.
