Wilshere Secures Maiden Managerial Trophy as Luton Claims Vertu Trophy

Jack Wilshere achieved his first managerial honor after Luton defeated Stockport 3-1 in the Vertu Trophy final. The former Arsenal and England midfielder, a two-time FA Cup winner as a player, secured silverware in his debut season as a manager, thanks to goals from Emilio Lawrence and Nahki Wells' double. Wilshere aims to revive the club's fortunes after successive relegations led to Luton's decline from the Premier League in 2024 to 10th place in League One. Luton's 10th Wembley appearance created another memorable moment, rivaling their 1988 League Cup final win against Arsenal and the 2023 Championship play-off final triumph over Coventry. Stockport experienced another disappointing day at Wembley, having won only once in seven appearances and failing to defeat Luton in 18 matches since 1968. They have also lost all three EFL Trophy finals, including the previous two in 1992 and 1993. Referee Martin Coy made a significant call when he denied Luton a penalty in the second minute. Isaiah Jones was shoved to the ground by Josh Stokes, with replays showing significant contact. Stockport took an 11th-minute lead through Adama Sidibeh, who scored his eighth goal since joining from St Johnstone in January. Luton equalized in the 22nd minute when Jordan Clark's pass released Lawrence, who broke clear and fired a low shot through the keeper's legs. Veteran striker Wells put Luton ahead in the 39th minute after bringing down Kal Naismith's cross with a sublime touch and turning superbly to fire past the keeper. Luton might have added a third before the break, but Ben Osborn made a goal-saving tackle. In the second half, Clark went close to scoring a third for Luton, which finally came in the first of 10 added minutes. Player-of-the-match Wells scored his ninth goal of the season, latching onto Shayden Morris's cross and firing home from six yards. An emotional Wilshere admitted that winning at Wembley as a manager surpasses his experiences as a player. He praised his senior players, including Wells, for their key role in the success. Wilshere was delighted for the 35-year-old Wells, who had been an injury doubt for the game. Stockport manager Dave Challinor wants the Wembley defeat to motivate his team to secure their League One play-off place. Challinor added that promotion remains the main goal, with the play-off final being a one-game decider of the team's nine-month effort.
