The Dark Side of Women's Sports: Abuse, Harassment, and Death Threats

Female athletes face a barrage of criticism and abuse, from their appearance to their performance, with many feeling forced to compromise their identity and mental wellbeing to succeed in their sport. Despite their achievements, women in sports are often subjected to derogatory comments, with a survey finding that only 23% of girls aspire to become professional athletes, compared to 53% of boys. The constant scrutiny and pressure to conform to societal norms can be overwhelming, with many athletes feeling like they are walking on eggshells, never knowing when they will be targeted next. The situation is further complicated by the fact that social media platforms, while providing a powerful tool for self-expression and connection, can also be breeding grounds for hate and abuse. As the Online Safety Act 2023 comes into force, imposing stricter duties on social media companies, many are calling for more to be done to combat the level of abuse targeted at female athletes. With the rise of women's sports showing no signs of slowing down, it is imperative that we create a safe and supportive environment for these athletes to thrive, free from the fear of harassment and abuse.
