Nasser Hussain Urges Stokes to Reclaim His Batting Form

On the latest Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Nasser Hussain emphasized that England Test captain Ben Stokes must revert to his previous batting style. Following a disappointing 4-1 loss in Australia under head coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes, with their only win being a remarkable two-day Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, England's preparation and aggressive playing style have been criticized, and several off-field issues have arisen. Stokes acknowledged that the past three months have been the most challenging period of his captaincy but remains confident that the current leadership can propel the Test team forward. Hussain, who captained England from 1999 to 2003, acknowledged Stokes' poor performance in the Ashes series but stressed that he needs to focus on his own game and start scoring runs. According to Hussain, Stokes had a poor Ashes series, averaging just 18.40 with the bat, and has not played since suffering a groin injury in the final Test. However, Hussain believes that Stokes is an exceptional captain with excellent tactics, man-management, and empathy. Hussain emphasized that Stokes needs to bring clarity and authenticity to the team's messaging, particularly in regards to the playing style required to be selected. He suggested that Stokes should prioritize his own game, especially after injuries have affected his performance, and that the team's messaging should be centered around scoring runs, taking wickets, and making catches. Stokes is expected to miss the first month of the County Championship season with Durham as he recovers from facial surgery, but may return for fixtures against Worcestershire and Kent in May. England is currently seventh in the ICC World Test Championship standings, having suffered six defeats from ten outings, and will face New Zealand in their first Test series of the summer, starting on June 4.
