Great Britain Shocks Australia, Advances to Billie Jean King Cup Finals

In a thrilling Billie Jean King Cup qualifier, Great Britain stunned Australia with a 3-0 victory, as Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart sealed the win with a straight-set doubles triumph. The British duo overcame Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez 6-3, 6-4 in Melbourne. After initially trailing 3-1 in the first set, Burrage and Dart regained their footing, winning five consecutive games after the roof on John Cain Arena was closed. The pair went on to serve out the match in the second set, securing victory for Anne Keothavong's team. An emotional Burrage, who has overcome significant injuries, expressed her pride in the team's performance, saying, 'That feels amazing... I'm proud of us for the way that we played, the way that we came out and managed to close that out.' Harriet Dart added, 'It's crazy actually because we played pretty well and to be able to make the finals is just kind of surreal.' With several key players absent, including Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter, Dart and 17-year-old debutant Mika Stojsavljevic put Great Britain in charge with impressive singles victories on Friday. Although Katie Swan suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat to Emerson Jones due to a back issue, the team's overall performance was outstanding. Great Britain has now won its last four qualifier rubbers in the Billie Jean King Cup, with victories over France, Germany, Netherlands, and Australia. The team will compete in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen in September, alongside the other six tie winners and host nation China. Captain Keothavong beamed with pride, stating, 'We're all just overjoyed... it's been an unbelievable week here in Melbourne, and the tennis that was played yesterday and today was just fantastic.' With the team's semi-final appearance last year and their current momentum, Keothavong believes Great Britain is 'due something special' and has the potential to win the Billie Jean King Cup. When asked about their chances, the captain said, 'That's always the ultimate goal, and I know we've got players and a strength in depth in the UK to do something special in this competition... Absolutely, when we head to the finals, whoever is on my team, we're there. We're not there to make up the numbers, that's for sure.'
