Hull FC Announces Cartwright's Departure at Season's End

John Cartwright, the head coach of Hull FC, will be leaving the club at the end of the 2026 Super League season. Cartwright was appointed ahead of the 2025 campaign and has led the team to a seventh-place finish in his first year. Currently, the team is ninth in the 2026 standings with three wins and four losses after seven rounds. During his tenure, Cartwright has been in charge of 39 games, securing 19 victories. Initially contracted until the end of the 2027 season, the club has decided to release him from his contract a year early. According to Hull's CEO, Richie Myler, Cartwright played a crucial role in restoring stability and competitiveness to the team. The club has expressed gratitude for Cartwright's contributions and has announced that he will continue to lead the squad for the remainder of the season. Following the news of Cartwright's departure, the players reportedly opted not to participate in a scheduled training session, seeking communication from club officials regarding the decision. The club is currently in the process of securing a new head coach for the 2027 season and will provide an update soon. It has been reported that Hull FC has approached former Catalans Dragons head coach Steve McNamara, who is currently an assistant coach at Warrington Wolves, to take over the position. McNamara has a history with the club, having played for the Black and Whites from 1989 to 1996.
