Boulter's Clay-Court Campaign Begins with Early Exit

British tennis player Katie Boulter experienced a disappointing start to her clay-court season, falling in the first round of the Linz Open in Austria. She lost in straight sets to Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who secured a tight victory with a 7-6 (6-3) 7-6 (6-2) score. Boulter struggled initially, losing her first two service games, but managed to level the score at 4-4 in the opening set. However, Ruse gained the upper hand by winning the first tie-breaker comfortably. In the second set, Ruse broke Boulter's serve immediately, and although Boulter broke back, she failed to capitalize on the opportunity. As the match progressed, Boulter was broken again after taking a 3-2 lead. When serving to stay in the match at 6-5 down, Boulter saved a match point but ultimately lost the second tie-breaker, ending her tournament prematurely. Ruse will proceed to face either Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine or American seventh seed Ann Li in the next round.
