Britain on Verge of Billie Jean King Cup Victory
Mika Stojsavljevic, ranked 275th globally, and Harriet Dart have brought a depleted Great Britain team to the threshold of winning a spot in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals against Australia. Stojsavljevic made a stunning debut, defeating world No 65 Talia Gibson 7-6 (7-4) 7-5, overcoming a 219-place difference in the WTA rankings. The 17-year-old 2024 US Open junior champion gave Britain a perfect start in the qualifiers. Stojsavljevic initially took a 3-1 lead but needed a tie-break to secure the first set and later defended five break points to win the second set. Following Stojsavljevic's win, Dart battled back to defeat Kiimberly Birrell 4-6 6-3 6-3, leaving Britain requiring just one more win from the remaining matches to qualify for the finals. Dart expressed her happiness at securing the win after Stojsavljevic's impressive performance and is set to team up with Jodie Burrage in the doubles rubber against Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez to potentially complete the tie for Britain.
