The hosts' second-half resurgence, fueled by goals from Leo Scienza and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, negated Carlton Morris' earlier strike.

The match began with a flurry of activity as Scienza created an early chance for Tom Fellows, whose heavy touch prevented a shot on goal. Derby was forced into an early substitution when Bobby Clark was replaced by Oscar Fraulo due to injury. Despite Derby's intent, Southampton dominated the early stages, with a sweeping attack involving Casper Jander and Ross Stewart culminating in a chance for Finn Azaz, who shot straight at Richard O'Donnell.

Derby's task was made more daunting by the absence of Patrick Agyemang, who will miss the next nine months due to an Achilles injury. Morris, tasked with leading the line, scored an unlikely opening goal when Joe Ward's corner deflected off Jander and dropped to him at the far post.
