Mateta Makes Instant Impact as Crystal Palace Overwhelm Fiorentina

Jean-Philippe Mateta made a triumphant return to the Crystal Palace starting lineup, scoring his first goal since the New Year as the Eagles dominated Fiorentina 3-0 in the Conference League quarterfinals. Mateta, who had not started since January, successfully converted a penalty before Tyrick Mitchell capitalized on a defensive blunder by Fiorentina to score the second goal. Ismaila Sarr sealed the victory with a late strike, putting Palace in a commanding position ahead of the second leg in Florence. This win marked the first time Palace had scored three goals at Selhurst Park since November, extending their unbeaten run to five games and seven Conference League matches without a loss. Crystal Palace's lineup included Henderson, Richards, Lacroix, Canvot, Munoz, Wharton, Kamada, Mitchell, Sarr, Guessand, and Mateta, with Pino, Lerma, Hughes, and Johnson available as substitutes. Kamada was named Player of the Match. The three-week break seemed to have rejuvenated Palace, as they came out with renewed energy, in stark contrast to their recent string of goalless draws. Fiorentina, currently five points above the relegation zone in Serie A, struggled to cope with Palace's intense start. The pace of the game led to Dodo's late challenge on Evann Guessand in the area, resulting in Mateta's penalty. Minutes later, Daichi Kamada's pass over the top found Daniel Munoz, who played it across to Mateta. Although De Gea saved Mateta's initial effort, Mitchell followed up to score. Fiorentina had a brief spell of threat in the second half but were largely contained by Henderson until Sarr scored, sealing their fate. In a post-match interview, Mateta expressed his joy, stating, 'What a night. It's been a long time, I didn't play, I didn't start. I'm very happy and very happy my guy (Mitchell) scored as well.' Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner praised Mateta, saying, 'I think that's what JP deserves. He always gives 100 per cent effort to the team, 100 per cent effort for Crystal Palace. He's scored so many important goals for us, and he also had a tough period now.' Glasner also commended the team's performance, particularly in the first half and the final 20 minutes, highlighting the great energy from both the team and the fans at Selhurst Park.
