McIlroy Sets Sights on New Challenges After Masters Victory

Following his successful title defense at the Masters, Rory McIlroy is reassessing his major goals, with opportunities to create more golfing history. Having completed the career Grand Slam at Augusta National, McIlroy became a back-to-back winner at the Masters with a one-shot victory over world No 1 Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy's latest victory leaves him alongside Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods as the only players to successfully defend at the Masters. He is now looking to pursue other golfing milestones, including becoming a double Grand Slam champion and further cementing his status as an all-time great. With seven top-10 finishes at the US Open, McIlroy has his sights set on the upcoming edition at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York. He has also impressed at the next two Open venues, posting a top-four finish at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in 2017 and taking third at St Andrews' Old Course in 2022. Only Nicklaus and Woods have won all four majors on multiple occasions, and McIlroy is a long way from that, but a double Grand Slam is a potential target. McIlroy has already won the PGA Championship on two separate occasions and is halfway to becoming a double Grand Slam champion. He has had seven top-10 finishes at the US Open since his maiden major title in 2011. With his latest success, McIlroy takes his major tally to six, the same number as Faldo, Trevino, and Mickelson. One more major would see McIlroy surpass Faldo as the most successful European golfer in the modern era. McIlroy is already Europe's greatest-ever golfer, given he is the only male from the continent to complete the career Grand Slam. His legacy in the Ryder Cup is already confirmed, with McIlroy set for multiple more appearances in the years ahead and destined to be captain at some stage. McIlroy's game is expected to survive for six or seven years, with his short game and all-roundedness allowing him to remain competitive. With the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open still to come, McIlroy is working towards new major targets. He has the opportunity to win all four majors, having won two Masters, two PGAs, and having a chance to win two Opens and two US Opens.
