The Dark Side of Women's Sports: Abuse, Harassment, and Death Threats
Female athletes are bombarded with criticism, not just for their performance, but for their appearance, personality, and lifestyle. The constant scrutiny and abuse have led to a decline in the number of girls aspiring to become professional athletes. A survey found that only 23% of girls dream of sporting glory, compared to 53% of boys. The research also revealed that teenage girls feel they don't belong in sports, are judged, and worry about not having the 'right' body. The situation is further exacerbated by social media, where athletes are subjected to vicious online abuse, including death threats and explicit pictures. The Women's Tennis Association and International Tennis Federation reported that 458 players were direct targets of abuse in 2024, with 40% of the abuse coming from frustrated gamblers. The Online Safety Act 2023 has imposed strict duties on social media companies, but the measures do not go far enough to combat the level of abuse targeted at female athletes. Sportswomen are speaking out against the abuse, with many calling for greater protection and support. As one athlete noted, 'It's not about pointing the finger and telling people they are wrong, but it's just important to know that we stand together as female athletes and we're not going to tolerate or put up with people saying personal things or people directly commenting on people's appearances, livelihood, how they go about themselves.' The issue highlights the need for a shift in focus from how sportswomen look or behave to what they achieve, and for greater support and protection for female athletes.
