Brundle: Russell Must View Antonelli as a Formidable Title Rival
According to Martin Brundle, George Russell should consider his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli as a significant title contender, akin to Lewis Hamilton at the height of his career. The Mercedes team has dominated the start of the season, winning the first three races, but it is Antonelli who surprisingly leads Russell by nine points. The young Italian driver has been fortunate, with a timely safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix helping him secure a second consecutive victory. Despite being in only his second F1 campaign, Antonelli's performance has made the title battle between the two Mercedes drivers more competitive than anticipated. Russell, who earned his Mercedes seat in 2022 after spending three years with Williams, was initially considered the clear title favorite. However, Brundle believes Russell should be concerned after the first three races, as Antonelli's pace has been impressive. Brundle stated that Russell needs to treat Antonelli as a major threat, similar to how he would have viewed Hamilton in his prime. Antonelli's ability to bounce back from a significant crash on the opening weekend of the season has also impressed Brundle, demonstrating the young driver's resilience. While Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has downplayed Antonelli's championship chances, Brundle thinks Russell's experience will ultimately give him an edge over the course of the season.
