Great Britain Shocks Australia, Advances to Billie Jean King Cup Finals

Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart delivered a decisive 6-3, 6-4 win in their doubles match against Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez, capping off a remarkable team effort in Melbourne. After initially trailing 3-1 in the first set, the British duo rebounded strongly, winning five consecutive games after the arena's roof was closed. Following an intense start to the second set, Burrage and Dart successfully served out the match to seal the victory for their team. An emotional Burrage, who has overcome significant injuries, expressed her pride in the team's performance, saying, 'That feels amazing... I'm proud of us for the way that we played, the way that we came out and managed to close that out.' Dart added, 'It's crazy actually because we played pretty well and to be able to make the finals is just kind of surreal.' The British team's road to the finals was paved by impressive singles victories from Harriet Dart and debutant Mika Stojsavljevic, who defeated higher-ranked opponents on Friday. Although Katie Swan suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat in her match against Emerson Jones due to a back issue, the team's overall performance was outstanding. Great Britain has now won its last four qualifier rubbers in the Billie Jean King Cup, with victories over France, Germany, Netherlands, and Australia. The team will compete in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, alongside the other six tie winners from the qualifiers and host nation China, in September. Captain Keothavong praised her team, saying, 'We're all just overjoyed... it's been an unbelievable week here in Melbourne, and the tennis that was played yesterday and today was just fantastic.' Keothavong believes that Great Britain is 'due something special' after reaching the semi-finals last year and is confident that her team can make a strong impact in the finals, stating, 'That's always the ultimate goal and I know we've got players and a strength in depth in the UK to do something special in this competition.'
