Southampton Thrashes Wrexham to Claim Sixth Spot

Southampton put on a dazzling show, crushing Wrexham 5-1 to leapfrog them into sixth place in the Championship table. Any concerns about a letdown after their FA Cup win over Arsenal were quickly dispelled as the Saints sprinted to a two-goal lead courtesy of early strikes from Kuryu Matzuki and Flynn Downes. Josh Windass pulled one back for Wrexham before halftime, but their hopes of a comeback were rapidly extinguished as Cyle Larin added a third, and his replacement Ross Stewart headed in a fourth for the Saints. Finn Azaz sealed the victory with a late fifth goal. The win propels Southampton into the playoff spots, two points clear of Wrexham in seventh, with a game in hand, and just six points behind Ipswich in second. This victory marks Southampton's 10th in an unbeaten sequence of 13 league games, and with their current form, Eckert's side seems to be timing their run to perfection. From the outset, their intent was clear, with Larin and Azaz both hitting the bar in the eighth minute. Larin was unfortunate after meeting Ryan Manning's cross with a deft header, but Azaz should have done better than to plant the rebound against the woodwork. Azaz quickly made amends for the miss, setting up the opener on 12 minutes by threading a fine ball through to Matsuki, who took a touch and slotted a shot past a wrong-footed Arthur Okonkwo. The Saints continued to dominate the game, doubling their lead 10 minutes later as Wrexham failed to clear a James Bree free-kick, allowing Downes to thump home. Wrexham then got one back as a long ball from Okonkwo was flicked on by Kieffer Moore, and Windass produced a moment of class, controlling and flicking past Jack Stephens to fire into the bottom corner. Larin finally got the goal he deserved after 61 minutes, racing clear from halfway and calmly lifting over Okonkwo. Wrexham were not quite beaten, as Moore headed against the post from close range, but Azaz struck an upright at the other end moments later. The Saints underlined their superiority nine minutes from time when Stewart headed in from a Welington free-kick, and Azaz put the seal on victory two minutes later. Wrexham's Phil Parkinson noted, 'We've got to use this as a lesson, even at this late stage of the season. We knew coming into this game the importance of it, and it hurts a lot that we haven't put in a competitive performance.' Southampton's Tonda Eckert said, 'I think the team is so focused at the moment, there's not much that I need to say. My job is just to make sure that I prepare them in the best way possible for the games coming up.'
