Southampton Thrashes Wrexham 5-1 to Claim Sixth Spot

Josh Windass pulled one back for Wrexham before the break, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed as Cyle Larin added a third, followed by Ross Stewart's header for a fourth, and Finn Azaz sealed the victory with a late fifth. The win propels Southampton into the play-off places, two points clear of Wrexham in seventh, with a game in hand, and just six points off Ipswich in second. This victory marks Southampton's 10th in an unbeaten sequence of 13 league games, with Eckert's side timing their run perfectly. The Saints' intent was clear from the start, with Larin and Azaz both hitting the bar in the eighth minute. Azaz made amends for his miss by setting up the opener, threading a fine ball through to Matsuki, who slotted past a wrong-footed Arthur Okonkwo. The Saints continued to dominate, doubling their lead as Downes thumped home after Wrexham failed to clear a James Bree free-kick. Wrexham got one back through Windass, but Larin finally got the goal he deserved, racing clear and calmly lifting over Okonkwo. Wrexham's Moore headed against the post, while Azaz struck an upright at the other end. The Saints underlined their superiority with Stewart's header from a Welington free-kick and Azaz's late strike. Wrexham's Phil Parkinson reflected on the defeat, saying, 'We've got to use this as a lesson... We knew coming into this game the importance of it, and it hurts a lot that we haven't put in a competitive performance.'
