As a consequence of his comments, Chelsea's head coach, Liam Rosenior, announced that Fernandez would be excluded from the squad for two matches. Real Madrid is expected to sign a midfielder in the summer, with Fernandez being one of their targets, valued at over £100m. However, Chelsea has no intention of selling him. Fernandez is seeking improved terms on his contract, but his recent comments may have hindered his cause. In an interview, Fernandez cast doubt over his future at Chelsea, stating 'I don't know' when asked if he would still be at the club next season. He also mentioned that he likes Madrid, comparing it to Buenos Aires. Rosenior addressed the situation, stating that 'a line was crossed' and a sanction was necessary. Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, deemed the decision to drop him for two games as 'completely unfair,' explaining that Fernandez was simply expressing his preference for a city and not indicating a desire to leave Chelsea. Pastore also revealed that contract renewal talks have stalled, with the aim of revisiting discussions after the World Cup. Rosenior has since downplayed the situation, describing his relationship with Fernandez as being in a 'very good place' and expressing his desire to move forward and focus on the remainder of the season.
