Smith Rediscoveries Century Form in Surrey's Season-Opening Draw

Jamie Smith made a remarkable comeback from a disappointing Ashes tour in Australia with a century, helping Surrey secure a draw in their first County Championship match of the season against Warwickshire. Smith, who averaged 23.44 in the five Tests in Australia, reminded England selectors of his capabilities with 132 runs at No 3 in Surrey's second-innings score of 447-4 at Edgbaston. Despite trailing by 47 runs with three wickets down at the start of day four, following Warwickshire's massive first-innings total of 544, Smith's century and Dan Lawrence's 161 ensured the match ended in a stalemate. The pair put on 217 runs for the fourth wicket, sealing the draw. Elsewhere in Division One, Somerset and Nottinghamshire drew at Taunton, while Glamorgan and Yorkshire also ended in a draw in Cardiff. Sussex secured a 222-run victory over Leicestershire, joining Essex as the only top-tier teams to register a win in the opening week. In Division Two, Middlesex triumphed by an innings and 14 runs over Gloucestershire, while Lancashire's first-class captain James Anderson narrowly missed out on victory in his first match. Northamptonshire's tail-enders hung on for a draw, and Durham ran out of time to force a win over Kent. Worcestershire also held on for a draw at Derbyshire, with England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir claiming 1-55 from his 27 overs.
