Great Britain Stuns Australia, Advances to Billie Jean King Cup Finals

In a thrilling match, Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart led Great Britain to a decisive 3-0 victory over Australia in their Billie Jean King Cup qualifier, winning their doubles match in straight sets. The British duo defeated Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez 6-3, 6-4, completing the victory in Melbourne. Initially trailing 3-1 in the first set, Burrage and Dart regained momentum after the roof on John Cain Arena was closed, reeling off five consecutive games. After exchanging breaks early in the second set, the pair successfully served out the match on their first attempt, sealing the win for Anne Keothavong's team. An emotional Burrage expressed her pride in the team's performance, stating, 'That feels amazing... I'm proud of us for the way that we played and managed to close that out.' Dart added, 'It's crazy because we played pretty well, and to be able to make the finals is just kind of surreal.' With key players like Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter absent, Dart and debutant Mika Stojsavljevic, 17, had put Great Britain in charge with singles victories over higher-ranked opponents on Friday. Despite Katie Swan's 7-5, 6-3 defeat to former junior world No 1 Emerson Jones due to a back issue, Great Britain emerged victorious. The team has now won their last four qualifier rubbers in the Billie Jean King Cup, with victories over France, Germany, Netherlands, and Australia. They will move on to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen in September, competing against the other six tie winners from the qualifiers and host nation China. Captain Keothavong expressed her pride in the team, stating, 'We're all just overjoyed... it's been an unbelievable week here in Melbourne, and the tennis that was played yesterday and today was just fantastic.' Keothavong believes Great Britain is 'due something special' after reaching the semi-finals last year and is confident that they can win the Billie Jean King Cup, saying, 'That's always the ultimate goal, and I know we've got players and a strength in depth in the UK to do something special in this competition.'
