Blackburn and West Brom Play to a Draw, Edging Closer to Safety

Blackburn secured their third consecutive clean sheet in a goalless draw against fellow relegation contenders West Brom. The stalemate followed an earlier draw between Portsmouth and Oxford, with both teams aware that a win would significantly enhance their survival prospects. However, it was not surprising that two teams known for their resilience would cancel each other out, with the only clear opportunity arising in the first half when Aune Heggebo's effort was spectacularly tipped onto the goal frame by Balazs Toth. While West Brom dominated the first half, Blackburn took control in the second, but aside from a blocked Mathias Jorgensen shot, they were unable to breach the visiting team's resolute defense. Blackburn's unbeaten run now stands at four games, with only one goal conceded during this period, and they are six points clear of the relegation zone. West Brom's impressive run under James Morrison continues, with their unbeaten streak now at six matches, keeping them four points above the bottom three. The visitors, bolstered by a substantial away following of over 7,500, made a positive start, with Danny Imray crossing to Isaac Price in the seventh minute, but the attacker missed from 12 yards out. Albion would have taken the lead on the half-hour mark but for an incredible save, as Josh Maja cushioned a header into the path of Heggebo six yards out, and his powerful strike was diverted onto the crossbar by Toth before Blackburn cleared. The hosts struggled to create any meaningful opportunities and only had off-target efforts from Todd Cantwell and Ryoya Morishita to show for their first-half endeavors. Michael O'Neill made half-time changes, opting for a formation switch, and Blackburn seemed to benefit from it, forcing two early corners. From the first, Max O'Leary's unconvincing punch fell to Moussa Baradji, whose half-volley sailed over. Immediately, Rovers forced another corner, which was headed wide by Tom Atcheson in the 50th minute. The switch to 4-4-2 gave West Brom's defense more to consider, and Rovers went close again in the 67th minute when Yuki Ohashi's left-wing cross fell to substitute Mathias Jorgensen in the area, but his shot was superbly blocked by Ousmane Diakite. As the match wore on, it became increasingly apparent that a single goal would be sufficient for victory in such a tight contest, and Daryl Dike almost provided it for Albion with five minutes remaining, but Dapo Afolayan slid in to deflect over. Blackburn's Alex Neil stated: "I can see why he's the number one choice for his country. He has played exceptionally well since I've been here. He is capable of making crucial saves at pivotal moments in the game. Top goalkeepers do that. He possesses those traits. "We must be satisfied with four points from two games. I didn't think we played as well today. There's always a concern that after what the players put into the game on Friday, they can reach the same level physically. "In the first half, we struggled a bit with that, gave the ball away cheaply. The goalkeeper made an incredible save for us, which we needed at that point in time. "However, in the second half, I thought we were significantly better. I thought we looked like the team more likely to win the game, but we didn't capitalize on some of the opportunities we had. "We must be pleased with the clean sheet. It keeps us six points clear of the teams in the bottom three." West Brom's James Morrison said: "It was fantastic, wasn't it? For an away performance, if that goes in, 1-0, you come away and think that's a great away performance. But I have to give credit to the goalkeeper. I don't think Heggebo could have done much more. "I thought two teams looked a bit nervy given the situation we're in, which is normal. I was happy after the game because I've seen my players give everything out there, but we just lacked the quality in the final third and when we got there with set plays at the end, our quality wasn't there today. "I've seen my players give everything, really. Even when we lost the ball, everyone ran back. Balls came into the box, and headers, the block Ousmane (Diakite) made at the end. "On that front, I'm happy, but disappointed with the lack of composure and quality when we got into good areas."
