Katie Boulter's Clay-Court Campaign Begins with Early Defeat
Katie Boulter's clay-court season got off to a disappointing start as she crashed out of the Linz Open in the first round, losing to Elena-Gabriela Ruse in a closely contested match. Ruse, ranked 25 spots below Boulter, secured a hard-fought victory, winning 7-6 (6-3) 7-6 (6-2). Boulter struggled initially, being broken in her first two service games, but managed to level the score at 4-4 in the opening set. However, Ruse dominated the first tie-break and carried her momentum into the second set. Despite breaking Ruse early in the second set, Boulter failed to capitalize and was broken back immediately. She then broke again to take a 3-2 lead but was broken once more. Serving to stay in the match at 6-5 down, Boulter saved a match point but ultimately lost the second tie-break. Ruse will now face either Dayana Yastremska or Ann Li in the last 16.
