The hosts initiated the game with vigor, as Scienza made a run down the left flank and delivered a cross for Tom Fellows, whose clumsy first touch thwarted a potential scoring opportunity. Derby was compelled to make an early substitution in the ninth minute, replacing the injured Bobby Clark with Oscar Fraulo. The Rams, who began the day merely three points behind Southampton, exhibited considerable determination in their pursuit of a crucial victory. A clever exchange between Morris and Max Johnston enabled the latter to break free down the left channel, although he squandered the chance by shooting into the side netting.
