Draper's Clay-Court Season Off to a Disappointing Start with Injury-Forced Retirement in Barcelona

Jack Draper's clay-court season got off to a poor start as he was forced to retire due to injury in the deciding set of his first-round match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the Barcelona Open. Draper had won the first set 6-3, but his movement was hindered by a knee issue from the start of the second set, and he eventually retired trailing 4-1 in the third set. The injury came as a setback for Draper, who had started the match strongly but struggled with his knee throughout. Draper's opponent, Etcheverry, praised him as a great competitor and fighter, saying 'He was playing unbelievable... He is a great competitor. I liked how he plays. He's a great fighter and hopefully he can recover as soon as he can to get back on tour because the tour likes him.' This was Draper's fourth tournament back on the ATP Tour since a left-arm injury kept him sidelined since last August's US Open. Meanwhile, British No 1 Cameron Norrie overcame a gruelling three-set match against Stan Wawrinka to book his place in the second round, winning 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4. Norrie, who was not feeling physically well during the match, said 'I had to dig deep mentally... I had to dig deep and get fired up in some moments and I managed to do that in the third set when I was a couple of break points down.' In other news, Katie Boulter eased into the last 16 of the Rouen Open with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Maria Timofeeva. Boulter is targeting a good run in Rouen, and potentially a first clay court title of her career.
