Soldier In Milan Triumphs Over Rivals in Irish Grand National

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Soldier In Milan defied his lack of experience to secure a stunning victory in the Boyle Sports Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse. Trained by Emmet Mullins, the seven-year-old had only run five times under rules prior to this event, including a successful bumper at Punchestown Festival last spring and four runs over fences this season. Despite being beaten into fourth place as a strong favourite in a Grade Three novice chase at Thurles last month, Soldier In Milan was a well-supported 6-1 favourite going into the Easter Monday feature. Under the expert guidance of Donagh Meyler, he maintained a strong pace throughout the race, taking the lead from British contender Monbeg Genius and powering his way to the finish line with an impressive 16-length margin. Showurappreciation and The Enabler attempted to close the gap, but neither could match the winner's incredible performance, earning Soldier In Milan a quote of 33-1 for next year's Cheltenham Gold Cup with several bookmakers. Mullins expressed his delight, stating, 'It hasn't really sunk in yet. I was pinching myself jumping the last with a lap to go; he was jumping and travelling smoothly.' The trainer had warned Meyler to wait as long as possible before making his move, and the jockey executed the plan flawlessly. Mullins attributed Soldier In Milan's success to his classy nature, saying, 'Leaving out a hurdle campaign was a risk, but we hoped he had the class to overcome his inexperience.' The trainer also praised Meyler's ride, saying, 'He executed everything brilliantly; it was a brilliant ride.' When asked about a potential Gold Cup campaign, Mullins remained cautious, stating, 'He's a classy individual, but this has been a route to the Aintree Grand National in the past. We won't commit to anything just yet.' In another notable performance, Energumene, a 12-year-old veteran trained by Willie Mullins, claimed an emphatic victory in the Underwriting Exchange Fairyhouse Chase. Despite his advanced age, Energumene demonstrated his enduring ability and enthusiasm, travelling strongly throughout the two-and-a-half-mile race and scoring by six lengths from stablemate Blood Destiny. Mullins expressed his amazement at Energumene's performance, saying, 'I don't know what he's on at 12 years old, but I'm going to get some of it!' The trainer plans to enter Energumene in the Punchestown Festival before deciding on his future racing plans.
