Stoke City Holds Off Blackburn to Secure a Draw

Adam Forshaw's rare goal put Blackburn on the path to a crucial point in their quest for Championship survival, but Stoke City fought back to claim a 1-1 draw despite finishing with 10 men. Forshaw, who has been goal-shy in recent years, broke the deadlock in the 21st minute with a beautifully curled shot from 20 yards. However, his effort was cancelled out by Crystal Palace loanee Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, who levelled for Stoke City in the 56th minute. The home side then suffered a setback when Ash Phillips was sent off for a second bookable offence with just three minutes remaining. Despite this, Stoke City held on to secure a valuable point. The match marked the return of Michael O'Neill to Stoke City, where he previously managed 143 games before being sacked in 2022. The Northern Irishman would have been pleased with his side's first-half display, which saw them take a deserved lead. Forshaw's goal was a rare highlight in an otherwise lean spell in front of goal for the midfielder. Stoke City responded well to the setback of conceding, with Sam Gallagher and Eric Bocat both going close before the break. The home side continued to push forward in the second half and were eventually rewarded with their equaliser. Rak-Sakyi's goal was a result of good work by Million Manhoef and Eric Bocat, who combined to create the chance for the young striker. The match could have gone either way in the closing stages, with both sides creating opportunities. However, it was Stoke City who finished the stronger, with Lamine Cisse spurning a late chance to win it for the home side. The draw leaves Blackburn four points clear of the relegation zone, while Stoke City remains in mid-table. The result will be seen as a positive one for Michael O'Neill's side, who are now unbeaten in five games. The Blackburn boss was pleased with the point, but acknowledged that his side had ridden their luck at times. Stoke City manager Mark Robins, on the other hand, was left to bemoan the disappointment of his side's fans, who had been expecting a win. Robins called for patience and unity, reminding supporters that the club is still in a rebuilding phase after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
