Smith Revives Form with Century as Surrey Forces Draw Against Warwickshire

Jamie Smith rebounded from a tough Ashes series in Australia with a century, helping Surrey secure a draw in their County Championship opener against Warwickshire. Smith, who averaged 23.44 in the five Ashes Tests, reminded England selectors of his abilities with 132 runs at No. 3 in Surrey's second-innings total of 447-4 at Edgbaston. Despite trailing by 47 runs with three wickets down at the start of day four, following Warwickshire's massive 544 in the first innings, Smith's century and Dan Lawrence's 161 ensured a stalemate. The pair put on 217 for the fourth wicket, turning the match around. Elsewhere in Division One, Somerset and Nottinghamshire drew at Taunton, as did Glamorgan and Yorkshire in Cardiff, while Sussex secured a win at Leicestershire. James Rew, a potential rival to Smith for the England Test wicketkeeper spot, scored a second-innings hundred for Somerset but added only 14 to his overnight 108 not out. Tom Kohler-Cadmore also reached a century, and the hosts declared on 407-5. Nottinghamshire comfortably drew, reaching 140-3 in 45 overs, with Ben Slater top-scoring with 60. Yorkshire had a nervier finish, holding out on 239-7 from 67.4 overs after being set 295 to win. Glamorgan had declared on 218-5, with Colin Ingram scoring 75, before seeking wickets. Mason Crane took 3-99, including another three wickets, to reduce Yorkshire to 139-3, but Adam Lyth's 97 proved crucial. His dismissal at 174-5 gave Glamorgan hope, but they ran out of overs. Sussex, like Essex, who beat Hampshire by an innings, registered a win, defeating Leicestershire by 222 runs. The hosts, resuming on 125-5, were bowled out for 258, despite resistance from Stephen Eskinazi and Ben Cox. Henry Crocombe took 4-36, finishing with match figures of 9-69, as Sussex wiped out their 12-point deduction and moved 10 points ahead. In Division Two, Middlesex triumphed over Gloucestershire by an innings and 14 runs at Lord's, taking their last seven wickets for 83 runs. James Anderson, in his first match as Lancashire's captain, missed out on victory by one wicket against Northamptonshire, who hung on for a draw. Anderson removed Lewis McManus and Louis Kimber but couldn't get past George Bartlett, who scored 95 not out in a four-and-a-half-hour rearguard. Durham ran out of time to force a win over Kent, declaring on 218-9 and removing Zak Crawley but finishing five wickets short. Tawanda Muyeye hit an unbeaten 109 as Kent reached 254-5. Worcestershire also drew, closing on 314-7 after being forced to follow on, with Shoaib Bashir claiming 1-55 but unable to secure a win.
