Brundle: Russell Must View Antonelli as a Formidable Title Rival

According to Martin Brundle, George Russell should consider his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli a significant threat, akin to Lewis Hamilton at the height of his career, as the two engage in an increasingly intense title battle. Mercedes has dominated the start of the season, securing victories in the first three races, but Antonelli surprisingly holds a nine-point lead over Russell. The Italian's fortunes have been boosted by a timely safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix, allowing him to overtake Russell and claim his second consecutive win, following Russell's victory in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. With Antonelli in only his second F1 campaign, Russell was initially favored to win the title, but the early results suggest a more competitive battle between the two Mercedes drivers than anticipated. Having earned his Mercedes seat in 2022 after a three-year stint at Williams, Russell was previously paired with Lewis Hamilton for three seasons before the seven-time world champion joined Ferrari in 2025. Brundle stated on The F1 Show podcast, 'If I were George, I'd be more concerned after three races than I was at the beginning of the season.' Russell had to 'tolerate' a non-dominant Mercedes team after joining, but now that the team has a championship-caliber car, he must be cautious of Antonelli's rising form. Brundle emphasized that Russell needs to view Antonelli as a serious title contender, akin to Hamilton in his prime, and that he must beat the young Italian to secure the championship. Antonelli demonstrated his resilience after a significant crash during the final practice session of the Australian Grand Prix, quickly recovering to secure a solid lap and finish second behind Russell. Brundle praised Antonelli's ability to bounce back, saying it was 'one of the most telling things' about a young driver's potential. While Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has downplayed Antonelli's title chances, Brundle believes Russell's experience will ultimately give him an edge, but he has been impressed by the Italian's pace. Brundle noted that Antonelli's father and Toto Wolff had cautioned against expecting too much from the young driver, but his performance has been mighty, and he got lucky with the safety car in Japan.
