Nunez: My Goal Is to Become a Champion with Ipswich

Marcelino Nunez is preparing for a fiery reception when he returns to his former club, Norwich, with his new team, Ipswich, on Saturday. Nunez made the switch from Norwich to Ipswich in August for £10m, becoming the first player to do so since Andy Marshall in 2001. He has since played a crucial role in helping Ipswich beat their rivals for the first time in 16 years, scoring the goal that settled the previous East Anglian derby in Norwich's favour before assisting in the 3-1 win over his old club. "Beating Norwich was a significant challenge for me, but I was determined to help Ipswich end their 16-year winless streak," Nunez tells Sky Sports. "Celebrating with the fans after the game was a natural reaction, and it was an emotional moment for me. In South America, we celebrate big wins with passion, and that's what came out in me that day." Nunez's celebrations, which included waving a corner flag in front of the jubilant Ipswich fans, were a testament to his desire to make a statement in the derby. The Chile international is unfazed by the hostile reception that awaits him at Carrow Road, citing his experience playing in intense derbies in South America as preparation for the challenge. "I've played in high-pressure games before, and I know how to handle myself," he explains. "I'm motivated to face Norwich and help Ipswich take another step towards the Premier League. My goal is to become a champion, and I believe Ipswich has the resources and the team to achieve that." Nunez's decision to join Ipswich was driven by his ambition to win titles, having already won five championships with his previous team in Chile. He praises Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, saying, "He's an excellent coach who has a winning mentality, and I think we can achieve great things together." The 26-year-old has been instrumental in Ipswich's success this season, with a win rate of 70% in the 20 games he has started. He has provided eight assists and scored three goals, including two free-kicks in a 4-1 win over QPR. Nunez credits McKenna with helping him improve his game, saying, "He's one of the best coaches I've had, and he gives me the confidence to perform at my best." As Ipswich prepares to face Norwich, Nunez remains focused on the task at hand. "We have seven games left, and we need to take it one step at a time," he says. "Reaching the Premier League would be a dream come true, but we can't get ahead of ourselves. We need to stay motivated and keep working towards our goal." With his sights set on the Premier League, Nunez is ready to face the heat of Carrow Road and help Ipswich take another step towards achieving their championship ambitions.
