Southampton continued their ascent up the Championship table with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over fellow play-off contenders Derby at St Mary's. The Saints came from behind to secure the win, with second-half goals from Leo Scienza and Taylor Harwood-Bellis cancelling out Carlton Morris' earlier strike.
This result extends Southampton's unbeaten run to 17 games. The match began with a flurry of activity, as Scienza created an early chance for Tom Fellows, whose heavy touch prevented him from shooting. Derby were then forced into an early substitution, replacing the injured Bobby Clark with Oscar Fraulo.
Despite being without the injured Patrick Agyemang, Derby showed intent and created several scoring opportunities. Max Johnston broke clear down the left channel but shot wastefully into the side netting, while Finn Azaz shot straight at Richard O'Donnell following a sweeping Saints attack.
Morris, tasked with leading the line in Agyemang's absence, scored an unlikely opening goal when Joe Ward's corner deflected off Casper Jander and dropped to him at the far post. Southampton sought a quick reply, with Harwood-Bellis nodding Ryan Manning's free-kick wide of the post as the wind swirled around St Mary's. The Saints continued to push forward, with Scienza laying on a chance for James Bree, who sliced his shot well wide of the post.
Derby had a rare scoring opportunity when Sammie Szmodics' 20-yard shot was saved by Daniel Peretz. However, the Saints soon got the goal they deserved, as Scienza finished off a flowing move by curling into the far corner after Jander and Azaz had created the opening.
St Mary's erupted once more when the Saints took the lead, as Harwood-Bellis connected perfectly with another Manning free-kick to head beyond O'Donnell. Derby manager John Eustace quickly made changes in an attempt to find a way back into the game, but the Saints remained resolute.
Harwood-Bellis reacted superbly to block Morris' effort from the edge of the six-yard box, securing the win for Southampton. In other Championship action, Sheffield United's Chris Wilder reflected on his team's recent struggles, stating, 'We got off to the worst possible start. Hull are in the position they are for a reason; they're a team that like to counter and suck you in and they've got talented players at the top of the pitch.' Wilder's counterpart, Sergij Jakirovic, was left to lament the decisions of the referee, saying, 'It is unbelievable for us because we were the better team today. We had so many chances and the game has been changed completely by the referee.' The £250,000 is up for grabs with Super 6, and as always it is completely free to play.
