Jack Wilshere secured his maiden managerial honour as Luton defeated Stockport 3-1 in the Vertu Trophy final. The former Arsenal and England midfielder, a two-time FA Cup winner as a player, achieved this triumph in his debut season as a manager, thanks to goals from Emilio Lawrence and Nahki Wells' double. Wilshere aims to restore Luton's former glory after successive relegations led the team from the Premier League in 2024 to 10th place in League One. Luton's 10th Wembley appearance yielded another memorable moment, comparable to their 1988 League Cup final win against Arsenal and the 2023 Championship play-off final victory over Coventry. Stockport, on the other hand, experienced another disappointing day at Wembley, with only one win in seven appearances and no victories against Luton in 18 matches since 1968. Luton equalized in the 22nd minute with Lawrence's goal and took the lead in the 39th minute through Wells. The veteran striker sealed the win with his second goal in the first minute of added time, securing Luton's Vertu Trophy victory. An emotional Wilshere expressed that winning as a manager surpasses his experiences as a player, praising his senior players for their crucial role in the success. Stockport manager Dave Challinor hopes to use the defeat as motivation to secure their League One play-off place, with promotion remaining the primary goal.
