Brundle: Russell Should View Antonelli as a Formidable Title Rival

According to Martin Brundle, George Russell must regard his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli as a significant threat, akin to Lewis Hamilton at the height of his career, as the two drivers engage in an emerging title battle. Mercedes has dominated the season's opening, securing victories in the first three races. However, it is Antonelli who surprisingly holds a nine-point lead over Russell. The 19-year-old Italian has been fortunate, with the timing of a safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix contributing to his second consecutive win, allowing him to surpass Russell. With Antonelli in only his second F1 campaign, Russell was initially considered the clear title favourite, but the early results suggest the competition between the Mercedes drivers may be more intense than anticipated. Having earned a Mercedes seat in 2022 after a three-year stint at Williams, Russell was paired with Lewis Hamilton for three seasons before the seven-time world champion joined Ferrari in 2025. Brundle stated on The F1 Show podcast, 'If I were George, I'd be more concerned after three races than at the beginning of the season. George has to treat Kimi Antonelli as if he's Lewis Hamilton in his prime, a genuine championship contender.' Brundle believes Russell's experience will ultimately prevail, but he has been impressed by Antonelli's pace, particularly in qualifying and races. The Miami Grand Prix, the season's second Sprint weekend, is set to take place on May 1-3, live on Sky Sports F1.
