Grey Dawning Outruns Solness in Thrilling Melling Chase Finish

In a masterful display, Grey Dawning skillfully dropped back in distance to outmaneuver Solness in a captivating duel at the JCB Melling Chase in Aintree. Solness, trained by Joseph O'Brien and moving up from two miles, took the lead from the start, sharing it with Gidleigh Park before asserting dominance down the back straight. However, Grey Dawning, trained by Dan Skelton and last seen finishing fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was always waiting to launch a challenge, racing with enthusiasm and jumping well. With two fences to go, Harry Skelton moved Grey Dawning to the front, and despite Solness refusing to give up, Grey Dawning's stamina ultimately saw him edge a neck verdict. Dan Skelton reflected on the decision to drop back to two and a half miles, stating, 'We were doing well but not quite winning, so we had to change things.' He also noted that the addition of cheekpieces was 'a little something extra' to help over the shorter trip. The victory marked a triumphant outcome for owner Robert Kirkland, who had recently suffered a personal loss. Jockey J J Slevin praised Solness's performance, saying, 'It was a great run; Joseph had him in great shape.' Henry de Bromhead, trainer of the Ryanair Chase winner Heart Wood, who finished third, commented, 'It all happened a bit quick over a furlong shorter on a sharper track,' and plans to go to Down Royal over three miles early next season. Jo Tizzard was pleased with JPR One's fourth-place finish, saying, 'He's run another great race but comes up a bit shy in Grade Ones.' In a separate event, Gold Dancer suffered a fatal injury after winning the William Hill Mildmay Novices' Chase, with connections describing it as a 'hollow victory.'
