Grey Dawning Outshines Solness in Thrilling Melling Chase

In a masterful display, Grey Dawning executed a flawless drop back in distance to outmaneuver Solness in the JCB Melling Chase at Aintree. Joseph O'Brien's Solness, stepping up from two miles, initially took the lead, but Grey Dawning, trained by Dan Skelton, waited patiently before launching a challenge. Under the guidance of Harry Skelton, the 5-1 chance seized the front with two fences remaining and edged out Solness by a neck. Reflecting on the decision to shorten the distance, Dan Skelton noted, 'We were doing well but not winning, so we had to try something different.' The victory marked a triumphant moment for owner Robert Kirkland, who has endured a difficult time following the loss of his wife. Jockey J J Slevin praised Solness's performance, saying, 'It was a great run, Joseph brought him here in great shape.' Meanwhile, Henry de Bromhead attributed Heart Wood's third-place finish to the sharper track and shorter distance, saying, 'He's probably always been more of a two-and-a-half to three-miler.'
